This game was going to be the toughest game of the season for St. John's
Football team. It was St. John’s second game of the season and St. Augustine’s
third. It was a top of the table six pointer, with a lot at stake for both
teams.
To start the match St. Augustine’s kicked off and the play was very even.
St. Augustine’s first attack was cleared by St. John’s. As the first half
went on, much of the action took place in the midfield area. St. John's were the
better side for much of the game. They won more of the ball in midfield and were
prepared to take more risks in attack. The accuracy of their passing was also
better. Five minutes into the game, Nick Ireland scored a beautiful goal for St.
John's. Following a good defensive tackle, Greg Lowe took the corner for St.
John's and Nick headed the ball beautifully into the net, making the score two
nil..
However, St. John's failed to keep the pressure on St. Augustine's in the
second half. St. Augustine's kept trying hard and put St. John's under
increasing pressure, winning more of the ball in the midfield area. Greg Lowe
hit the bar with a free kick, but that is the closest that St. John's came to
scoring in the second half. Near the end of the game, St. John’s defence
slipped up and were caught out and St. Augustine’s scored. Three minutes
later, St. Augustine’s scored again, this time due to a combination of bad
play and bad luck on the part of St. John’s. The final whistle blew, leaving
the final score 2-2.
The result leaves St. Augustine's clear at the top of the A League, although
St. John's have a game in hand. The last three minutes could turn out to be the
turning point in a very exciting season!
